Auch ich in Berlin

Liest man Biographien von zeitgenössischen Kunst- und Kulturschaffenden so fällt ins Auge, dass oft steht lebt und arbeitet in Berlin / lives and works in Berlin. Wie ein Mantra taucht dieser Satz bereits seit Jahren in Informationen zu Kultur und Kunst und in Biographien auf. Viele Schweizer Städte und Kantone unterhalten Ateliers und fördern Werkaufenthalte in der deutschen Hauptstadt.

Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass Goethe ähnliches gefühlt hatte, als er seinem Buch «Italienische Reise» den Untertitel «Auch ich in Arkadien» anfügte. Der Satz wurde vielfältig quer durch unser Kulturgeschichte angewendet und findet sich zum ersten Mal in dem gleichnamigen Gemälde des italienischen Barockmalers Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, gen. Guercino: «Et in Arcadia ego». Dort steht er auf einem Mauerstück geschrieben, auf dem ein Totenkopf liegt. Die Komposition ist gleichsam ein Stillleben mit zwei Hirten als Betrachtern im Bild. Damals war damit das Paradies gemeint, wo auch der Tot seinen Platz hat.

Seit Jahren bin ich neugierig auf Berlin, diese Stadt, die (noch immer) das kulturelle Paradies verspricht. So verbringe ich seit 2014 immer wieder Zeit in Berlin: Ja! Auch ich in Berlin, um mir über diese Stadt etwas Klarheit zu verschaffen. Damit startete 2014 ein Projekt, das länger daueren soll, und welches sich der Mail-Art aus den 70er Jahren erinnert. Eine Vielzahl von Postkarten mit Bildsujets aus der Berliner Geschichte und Gegenwart werden an Personen, Institutionen und Räume verschickt, die mit Kunst/Kultur etwas zu tun haben, und wo ich auch persönliche Kontakte habe. Die Karte wird mit Auch ich in Berlin und dem jeweiligen Datum bedruckt und verschickt.

Die Postkarten-Perfomanz geht Ende 2017 mit dem Einsammeln (Leihgabe) der Postkarten zu Ende.

If one reads biographies of contemporary artists and cultural workers, one notices that often it says lebt und arbeitet in Berlin / lives and works in Berlin. Like a mantra this sentence has been appearing for years in information about culture and art and in biographies. Many Swiss cities and cantons maintain studios and promote work stays in the German capital.

I can imagine that Goethe felt something similar when he added the subtitle “Auch ich in Arkadien” to his book “Journey to Italy”. The sentence has been used in many ways throughout our cultural history and is found for the first time in the painting of the same name by the Italian Baroque painter Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, gen. Guercino: “Et in Arcadia ego”. There it is written on a piece of wall on which a skull is lying. The composition is, as it were, a still life with two shepherds as observers in the picture. At that time, this meant paradise, where death also has its place.

For years I have been curious about Berlin, this city that (still) promises cultural paradise. So since 2014 I have been spending time in Berlin again and again: Yes! Me too in Berlin, to get some clarity about this city. With this, a project started in 2014, which is supposed to last longer and which remembers the Mail-Art from the 70s.
A large number of postcards with visual subjects from Berlin’s past and present will be sent to people, institutions and spaces that have something to do with art/culture and where I have personal contacts. The card is printed and sent with Me too in Berlin and the respective date.

The postcard performance will end at the end of 2017 with the collection (loan) of the postcards.
