Exercises (West)

Eine weiss gekleidete Figur krabbelt auf einer Skulptur des österreichischen Künstlers Franz West rum. Klammert sich fest und versucht das Gleichgewicht zu halten. Eine Begegnung anderer Art.

Sur «Exercises (West)» (c-print, diasec, 2008) il intervient vêtu d’une combinaison de papier blanc. Il s’emploie à investir sans aucun scénario et dans une sorte d’ivresse, les espaces publics ou privés. Parfois équipé d’un accessoire, le personnage se lance dans le plan fixe de la caméra établi préalablement par l’artiste. Le point de vue de la camera fonctionne alors comme le déclencheur d’une action. Tel un personnage de film de Buster Keaton, Ruth Baettig s’interdit la grâce, elle parcourt le cadre de l’image en apparaissant ou disparaissant dans le feu de l’action et dans une totale innocence. Les renversements des situations se produisent au propre comme au figuré, faisant resortir les différents contextes et environnements (montagne suisse, parcours sportif…) comme particulièrement clairs et aliénants. A figure dressed in white crawls around on a sculpture by the Austrian artist Franz West. Clings on tightly and tries to keep its balance. An encounter of a different kind.

On “Exercises (West)” (c-print, diasec, 2008) it intervenes dressed in a white paper suit. It tries to invest without any scenario and in a kind of drunkenness, public or private spaces. Sometimes equipped with a prop, the character throws itself into the fixed camera shot previously established by the artist. The camera’s point of view then functions as the trigger for an action. Like a character in a Buster Keaton film, Ruth Baettig refrains from grace, she runs through the frame of the image, appearing or disappearing in the heat of the action and in total innocence. The reversals of situations occur literally and figuratively, making the different contexts and environments (Swiss mountains, sports course…) appear particularly clear and alienating.
