15 Brass Plaques in Public Spaces Across Italy | 2010

Italy without Sicily makes no image in the soul: here is the key to everything… Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Here in Sicily, we turned our backs on our virtual travel companion Goethe and left behind his Italian Journey. We abandoned his traces and followed our own star… Vagabonding, wandering, circling, losing ourselves—this became a deliberate statement. We discovered new things and met people with names and stories.

Fifteen brass plaques—each dated with various odd dates in September—were installed in public spaces across Italy (without permission). Mounted about 30 cm above the ground—right at the level where dogs and other two-legged creatures relieve themselves—these plaques appeared at passageways, steps, and street crossings.

Some of the plaques have disappeared in the meantime, others can still be found…
